NJZ (NewJeans): Caught in Controversy and Suspension
Hello everyone. It's been a while. Life has kept me away from blogging...
I've been wanting to make time to write again, but it hasn't been easy. 😫 Still, I figured if I just start again like this, I might be able to find a rhythm. So here I am writing again, in the middle of the night. 🙂
While I’ve been away from this blog, so much has happened in the entertainment world.
From public criticism of Baek Jong-won to heartbreaking news about the late Kim Sae-rom and Kim Soo-hyun.
There were many stories, but today I want to talk about one that has been especially heavy on my heart: the recent situation with NJZ (NewJeans).
In case you're not familiar with what's happened, let me summarize the situation so far.
Official Activity Halted… and the Attempt at Independence
Back in March, NJZ attempted to break free from their former agency ADOR amidst a contract dispute, launching a new phase of their career. Under the new name NJZ, they opened official SNS accounts and introduced a rebranded identity, signaling their intention to reconnect with fans on their own terms. Many fans saw this as a courageous step toward true artistic autonomy. The name NJZ wasn’t just a cosmetic change; it symbolized their intention to depart from the traditional system and walk an independent path.
I, too, supported their continued challenge and reinvention. 🤗
But that hope didn’t last long. 😥 Just a few days later, things took another complicated turn.
Due to a court ruling, NJZ was ordered to suspend all activities, and just as quickly as their independent journey began, it was halted. Fans were stunned. Some even called on the members to personally clarify their positions, regardless of the ongoing legal issues. Thus, NJZ's attempt at independence hit a major setback almost as soon as it began.
The Interview That Turned Fans Away
The controversy didn’t end with the activity suspension. In an interview with TIME magazine, NJZ members expressed disappointment about the court's decision, saying, "Maybe this is the reality of Korea." The comment quickly went viral, sparking heated debate. Some interpreted it as a sweeping criticism of Korean society and the justice system.
Both Korean and international fans were divided. Several media outlets and legal experts warned that such comments could erode public trust. As global stars, the group was urged to exercise more caution with their words.
Attorney Koh Sang-rok, formerly of Kim & Chang, expressed concern as well. While it’s understandable to be frustrated by the outcome, he noted the expression used could be seen as disrespecting the court's legitimacy or generalizing about Korean society—something that requires greater sensitivity.
This ultimately caused some fans to distance themselves, and internal division began to emerge within the fandom. Even longtime supporters of NJZ expressed a mix of disappointment and concern. There's growing anxiety about how this controversy might affect NJZ’s long-term image.
I understand their frustration about things not going their way, but their actions came off as immature. Especially in a society sensitive to anti-Korean rhetoric, those remarks had consequences.
My Personal Thoughts on the Situation
To be honest, I feel genuinely sorry for the girls. 😥
They’ve had to shoulder enormous burdens at such a young age. From the beginning of their debut, NJZ was thrust into the global spotlight, taking on responsibilities and pressures most people their age never have to deal with. So yes, it's understandable that they might act emotionally or clumsily at times.
But even so, they need to recognize that emotional or careless words can lead to misunderstandings or discomfort for the public. As artists on a global stage, they must consider the weight their words carry. Trust from Korean society and fans is something that takes years to build—and only seconds to break. I sincerely hope they take this as a moment of reflection and growth. It won’t be easy, but I hope they are given a chance to mature.
And there’s one person I can’t ignore in all this...
That would be Min Hee-jin.
As one of the central figures in the initial legal dispute—and the person who discovered and nurtured NJZ—she’s now largely disappeared from public view.
At some point, the narrative shifted from "HYBE vs. Min Hee-jin" to "HYBE vs. NJZ," leaving the young members to fight on the front lines alone. I find that incredibly irresponsible. As someone who was supposed to protect and lead them, her sudden retreat during the height of the conflict has left many fans feeling betrayed.
Her creativity and artistic vision are undeniable, but so is the need for accountability. Even now, Min Hee-jin has yet to step forward, and it appears she has effectively abandoned them in this struggle. 😥😥😥
I honestly don’t know if it’s right for girls barely in their early twenties to be appearing in court and waging battles in the public eye like this...
Conclusion
The NJZ controversy is more than just a matter of halted activities—it’s a story of growing pains, missteps, and the fragile trust between public figures and the fans who support them.
Whatever path they choose going forward, I hope this becomes a turning point for them to seriously consider how their words and actions impact those around them.
The comment from former Kim & Chang lawyer Koh Sang-rok, who said, “It’s time to wake up from the dream,” really stuck with me. 😥
It’s as if young saplings, having only ever known the world of idols, were suddenly forced to face the harsh reality. 😭😭😭
And I must express my deep disappointment in Min Hee-jin, who vanished from the frontlines while these girls were left to face everything alone.
She acted like their guardian and escalated the issue through public discourse, only to disappear when the situation turned against her...
What are your thoughts on the NJZ controversy? And if I’ve missed any updates, I’ll be sure to post them quickly! Please share your thoughts in the comments.
And by the way—it’s good to be back! 🙂🤗🤩
