'Joker 2' Faces Harsh Criticism… Joaquin Phoenix & Lady Gaga: The Worst Combo?

Hello everyone!

This time, I bring some disappointing news. 😥

The highly anticipated sequel to 2019’s 'Joker'—'Joker: Folie à Deux'—has hit theaters, but contrary to expectations, it has been met with harsh criticism. The greater the anticipation, the greater the disappointment. Let’s take a closer look at how this film is being received.

I’ve heard many disappointed reactions from people around me. While I did watch 'Joker,' I haven’t seen the sequel yet—but judging from what I’ve heard, the disappointment seems to be real. 😥

Well then, let’s get started!

'Joker 2': Between Expectations and Disappointment?

The first 'Joker' was a phenomenal success, grossing over $1 billion worldwide and setting the record as the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. Joaquin Phoenix’s performance, the film’s dark atmosphere, deep psychological elements, and sharp social commentary left a lasting impact on audiences. However, from the start, 'Joker 2' was a film met with both high hopes and concerns.

The decision to adopt a musical format raised doubts about whether it would fit the tone of 'Joker.' As it turns out, post-release reactions suggest that these concerns were justified. The film has grossed approximately $200 million so far, falling significantly short of its predecessor’s blockbuster success. Critics and fans are divided, with some saying, "It failed to carry the weight of the first film," while others argue, "It’s a unique attempt but doesn’t fit the 'Joker' narrative."

People I know who watched 'Joker 2' mentioned that it completely undermined the character arc built up in the first film. They said Arthur Fleck’s transformation into the Joker was ultimately reduced to him being just another mentally ill person caught in his own delusions.

If I had watched it myself, I think I would’ve been quite disappointed too. 😅😅😅

Tension on Set: Trouble from the Beginning

Recently, actor Tim Dillon, who appeared in the film, expressed strong criticism on a podcast, calling it "one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen." He further revealed that even during filming, there was a noticeable sense of unease on set. Both the actors and crew reportedly had concerns about the film’s direction from the start.

One of the main points of contention was the decision to make the film a musical. Many on set questioned whether such an approach would work with the gritty and intense world of 'Joker.' Now that the movie is out, it seems that their fears were not unfounded, as many viewers are struggling to accept the drastic tonal shift.

Additionally, reports suggest that there was considerable tension during production. Some actors expressed doubt over the director’s creative choices, while certain crew members voiced skepticism about the overall direction of the film. In hindsight, these internal concerns seem to have translated directly into the final product’s reception.

Lady Gaga’s Passion and Effort

Despite the criticism, some have praised Lady Gaga’s performance. Joaquin Phoenix himself commended her, stating, "She is an actress who fully immerses herself in the role." 😮

He mentioned that she meticulously analyzed the character of Harley Quinn, demonstrating a level of dedication that was deeply felt on set.

Lady Gaga reportedly spent months preparing for the role, blending her unique style with the essence of Harley Quinn. To perfect the character’s signature madness and obsession with love, she studied past portrayals from comics and animated series, while also incorporating psychological insights. There are even rumors that she remained in a state of intense emotional immersion throughout filming to maintain her portrayal.

Even so, opinions on her performance remain mixed. Many still strongly associate Harley Quinn with Margot Robbie’s iconic portrayal, making comparisons inevitable. Whether Gaga’s take on the character will ultimately be embraced remains to be seen. As she continues her transition from a music icon to a serious actress, her future roles will be worth watching.

The Future of the 'Joker' Franchise?

With 'Joker 2' struggling at the box office and facing mixed reviews, the future of this franchise is uncertain. Will this be the last installment, or could we see another attempt to revive the series?

If they do decide to make a third film, the pressure will be immense. Who would take the director’s chair, and how could they possibly bring this series back to life?

Personally, I think a third installment may be unlikely… 🤔
